Understanding Tae Kwon Do

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art which emerged in the mid-twentieth century from other Korean martial arts. It has become one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the world. The art is characterized by powerful hand and leg techniques, which are used for unarmed self-defense or combat, or in organized sport competitions such as the Olympic Games. Taekwondo emphasizes the unification of mind, body, and spirit: the perfection of human character; social responsibility, and the appropriate use of force. Thus, the arts practice involves both mental and physical training.

From a technical standpoint, Taekwondo primarily focuses on fast, powerful, kicking and hand techniques, which are blended with sophisticated footwork, jumps, blocks, and avoiding actions.
Literally translated, the Korean word for “Tae” means to kick or squash with foot, “kwon” implies to block or punch with the hand/arm and “Do” means art / way of life. The art of kicking blocking and punching. It is rather a way of life. Through strict discipline, Taekwondo is constantly training the mind, body , and spirit.
Taekwondo is practiced by men, women, and children of all ages, for reasons encompassing self-defense, physical fitness, sport competition, artistic expression, and character development. It is estimated that there are more than 50 million Taekwondo practitioners worldwide.

TAE: KICK OR SQUASH WITH FOOT
KWON: PUNCH, STRIKE, BLOCK WITH HAND/ARM
DO: ART; WAY OF LIFE

Sidekicks Taekwondo Center is established under: the World Taekwondo Federation, and World Mission Taekwondo association and
U.S Black Belt Center inc.

We opened Feb. 2002 starting with 64 students and have grown to over 250 students.

One of the things different about the school is the NAME. Most martial arts schools have the school named after the instructor or animal names. Example “Dragon martial arts, or Kim’s Taekwondo” In Taekwondo we use a technique called a sidekick. This is one definition of sidekick, the other definition is a person. A sidekick is a loyal friend or partner who is at your side. (Batman/Robin) One cannot be complete without the other. So, therefore each student in this school is a sidekick to one another. The relationship between master and student, parents and children, friend and friend and the most important one of all we are sidekicks of our ultimate master Jesus Christ. That is why we are Sidekicks Taekwondo Center.

CHOONG-HYO

“CHOONG”: LOYALTY AND TO SERVE MY COUNTRY WITH ALL OF MY HEART.
“HYO”: HIGH RESPECT AND OBEY MY PARENTS AND ELDERS

CHOONG-HYO: LOYALTY AND FILIAL PIETY.
A SIDEKICK IS SOMEONE WHO DEMONSTRATES
GOOD CHOONG-HYO

KOREA CONNECTION
Some schools are not connected to their martial art origin, just because they teach karate, kung-fu, Taekwondo, etc are they really traditional and connected to that county. Well, Sidekicks has a connection to Korea. The headquarters of Taekwondo in Korea is called the Kukkiwon. I trained under korean masters, I taught in Korea, and we have a direct line to Korea because of our Grand master Jong-oh Chung.

CANVAS TO A MASTERPIECE

Tae Kwon Do is a way of life. Not only is this a sport, it is a life living sport and Art. Your training in Tae Kwon Do does not end in 1 month, 1 year, 5 years, even 10 years. It is an on-going training in life. Training mentally, physically, and spiritually. “Do” or the way of … represents your life how you live it, how you grow, how you mature, and what you put into it. Think of a canvas painting, before anything is on there it is blank, white, innocent, and nothingness. This blank canvas represents a beginning stage of Tae Kwon Do. The colors are than added to make pictures, this represents the color belt stage. After the colors are added you start to see the big picture and realize what you have accomplished, but you know this is a new beginning in training. At Black belt you see the colors and the understanding, now its time to define and detail those colors, pictures, lines, shades, and perception of the Art. At the Master level you have a full understanding and mastery of the colors, the detail, and are living the Art of Taekwondo. Now as a Master you have to take what you learned and apply to others the same style, structure, discipline, and education that it takes to make that “Masterpiece” of art-work that you have created. It is my goal to help guide you into a wonderful world of Tae Kwon Do. Through dedication, commitment, self-discipline, and the right mental, physical, and spiritual attitude you can accomplish many of your goals and dreams not just in Tae Kwon Do but in life as well. I may be only 26 years old, but I have many quality years of mental and physical training, that most people in their 20’s even 30’s have not even accomplished or have done. It is my vision that all students of mine, will grow mentally, physically, and spiritually and be true “sidekicks” to their family, friends, teachers, community, and to their God.
